In healthcare, the wall is a piece of medical equipment. It is touched, cleaned and disinfected every day, and it contributes to how patients feel. Here is what to look for when specifying.
1. Antibacterial performance you can verify
Look for test reports, not marketing language. A 99.9% antibacterial rate under JIS Z 2801 and grade-0 mould growth after 28 days are good benchmarks.
2. Disinfectant and stain resistance
Healthcare cleaning uses aggressive chemistry. The surface should shrug off iodine, potassium permanganate and alcohol-based disinfectants without staining or breaking down.
3. Fire and smoke
Public and clinical interiors generally require a B1 (B-s1, d0, t0) classification, with low smoke production.
4. Calm by design
Soft, natural colours and textures lower the emotional temperature of a ward. Choose finishes with the clinical team, not just the contractor.
Done well, a hygienic wall can feel warm and human — the two goals are not in conflict.
